Marian Sellergren, 93
Marian Sellergren, 93, Red Oak, formerly of Stanton, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, following a brief illness.
Marian Elaine Sellergren, the daughter of Clarence and Gladys (Fleming) Seaburg was born April 28, 1920, in Page County. After completing country school, Marian wanted to attend Stanton High School. She moved in with her grandparents who lived in Stanton to attend school. In 1938, Marian graduated from Stanton High and worked at Ossian’s Grocery in Stanton.
On June 16, 1939, Marian married Leland V. Sellergren at Bethesda. To this union three daughters were born, Mary Lee, Annette and Jane. Leland and Marian began farming south of Stanton. In 1949, they moved to their century farm west of Stanton and made it their home for 61 years. They farmed 25 years, before owning and operating Sellergren Propane for 18 years. Following Leland’s passing in 2010, Marian moved to Red Oak.
Marian was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church, 20th Century Club, Entre Nous Federated Club and a part of many neighborhood clubs, all in Stanton. She enjoyed counted cross stitch, Crewel needlework, word search games, baking and sewing. Marian and Leland loved traveling and sightseeing, especially on their Wyoming, Hawaii, Alaska and European trips. They were also avid Iowa Hawkeye fans and for years, attended many football games and several bowl games.
Marian was known by her family as “Mamoo,” a name given to her by her granddaughter. Marian’s awesome love for her daughters, granddaughters and great-grandchildren will live on in each of their hearts forever.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leland, June 27, 2010; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Merton Eastlick and brother-in-law, Donovan Sellergren.
Marian is survived by three daughters, Mary Lee Killion and husband, Dennis, of Red Oak, Annette Billings and husband, Doug, of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Jane Burnham and husband, Jim, of Barrington, Ill.; five granddaughters, Sarah Hermeling and husband, Tim, Sydney Matejka and husband, Jim, Rachel Hagan and husband, Jeremy, Melissa Billings and Abigail Whittaker and husband, Chris; step-granddaughter, Brooke Burnham Haines; eight great-grandchildren, Alex, Meredith and Lauren Hermeling, Cameron and Brandon Matejka and Emma, Luke and Adam Hagan and baby Whittaker due in September; sister-in-law, Marjorie Sellergren of Red Oak; one nephew and two nieces; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were Monday, March 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Stanton, with burial preceding the funeral at Mamre Cemetery at 10 a.m. Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli officiated.
