Sports Calendar: December 3

The winter sports season is finally here. Several area basketball teams will be in action for Tuesday night.

In the Corner Conference, Stanton and Essex will face off in a basketball doubleheader at Stanton High School.

It all starts at 6 p.m. with the girls game, with the boys to follow immediately after.

This will be the first game of the season for Trojanettes. Stanton began the season last Tuesday with a 49-39 win against the Bedford Bulldogs.

Stanton finished the 2012-13 season with a 16-6 record, easily defeating Essex both times.

This will be the opening games for both boys basketball teams. Stanton won both times against Essex last season.

The other area Corner Conference game taking place Tuesday night will feature East Mills at South Page as part of a varsity doubleheader, which starts at 6 p.m.

In the girls match-up, East Mills lost their opener last week to Shenandoah 66-38. They will try to avoid the 0-2 start to the season.

This will be the first time South Page has played girls basketball since the 2010-11 season. The previous two seasons they shared a basketball team with Essex.

In the boys match-up, both East Mills and South Page make their regular season debuts. The two teams played each other once last season, with East Mills winning 67-52.

Over in the Pride of Iowa Conference, Southwest Valley makes their regular season home debut tonight in a varsity doubleheader versus Shenandoah in Corning.

Both the boys and girls team are coming off losses Monday night on the road versus Griswold. The girls lost by two points, while the boys lost by 16.

Both Southwest Valley teams will try to get that first win as a basketball program.

Only the Fillies have played a game of the two Shenandoah teams. They defeated East Mills, last week.

Finally in the Western Iowa Conference, both Griswold teams try to get to 2-0 Tuesday night when they take on Bedford.
