Red Oak girls golf will focus on individual growth

The Red Oak girls golf team is light on numbers this season. Only one past letter-winner, Belle Perkins, returns for the Tigers, and five athletes are on the team total, four of which are seniors.

Last season the team had five members on the roster. They competed in five nine-hole matches and had a top-four average of 244.20. They also participated in three 18-hole matches and had a top four average of 503.3.

Last season’s team had some experience leave, with three of the five players graduating and only one returning this season.

“This year we’re going to focus on individual growth,” head coach John Gambs said.

Gambs said he will look to seniors Perkins and Katie Carlson for leadership this season.

“Perkins is a two-time letter-winner,” he said. “Katie has quite a bit of experience in junior golf and has a lot of potential.”

With so few members on the team, Gambs said it is hard to determine what expectations will be for the season, but stressed that the team will need to focus on getting better as individuals.
