Red Oak golf faces tough week

The Red Oak girls golf team had two matchups during the past week, as the girls went to Council Bluffs to take on Lewis Central, and hosted Glenwood at home Friday.Lewis Central was able to top Red Oak during their match Thursday, taking it by a score of 236-252.During a windy but pleasant 65-degree day, Red Oak was able to register a team score because they had enough golfers, which hasn’t always been the case, and was able to get some good results from the golfers.Katie Carlson was a runner-up medalist as she had the second-lowest score of any golfer on the course that day. She shot a 53, which was closely followed by Ashley Brower, who shot a 57.Belle Perkins had a solid round as well, as she shot a 62.Maria Pendleton rounded out the Red Oak field, as she shot an 80.For Lewis Central, the charge was led by medalist Payton Schmidt who shot a 45.She was followed by teammate Olivia Husa, who shot a 54 and just missed the runner-up spot by one stroke.She tied with her teammate Sarah Stepens, who also shot a 54.Taylor Brockmeyer rounded out the field with a round of 83.The next day the girls were back in action as they hosted Glenwood.Head coach John Gambs said at the beginning of the season, he was focusing on the girls showing improvement as the season went along. He said the numbers were too low to be concerned with winning the Hawkeye-10, but instead he wanted the girls to show individual growth throughout the season.Some of that improvement was on display against Glenwood, as freshman Carlson medaled after coming up just short against Lewis Central. Carlson’s round of 51 was her lowest score of the year and the day for anyone on the course.Perkins also shot her best round of the year in pristine weather conditions, with a 59.The top moment of the round was a birdie on hole four, which is a 140-yard par three.Gambs said these are the kind of results he envisioned at the start of the season, focusing on individual growth.“All of the girls continue to show improvement,” he said.The girls are back in action next week as they head to Clarinda for a dual match today starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Clarinda Country Club.The girls also have a triangular match where they take on three different teams Thursday. The Tigers will head south to Shenandoah to take on the Fillies, Atlantic and Lewis Central.The match starts at 4:30 and will be at the Shenandoah American Legion.At the track and field relays taking place at Red Oak Friday both the boys and girls golf seniors will be honored along with track and field seniors and tennis seniors.
