Red Oak opens season with losses to Underwood and FM

The Red Oak baseball team opened the 2013 season with losing their first two games.

Underwood 4, Red Oak 1

Red Oak fell behind early as they lost what was their second straight game to start the season on the road against Underwood.

The lone run for the Tigers came in the sixth inning courtesy of Nick Leinen, who finished the game 2-for-2 with two stolen bases. Nathan Guffey had the other hit for Red Oak as he was 1-for-3.

Tanner Johnson was the pitcher for Red Oak as he went six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts.

Fremont-Mills 13, Red Oak 3

The Tigers opened the 2013 season with a road loss to the Fremont-Mills Knights in six innings.

Red Oak fell behind early 2-0 thanks to a two-run home run by Fremont-Mills’ Clayton Wilson.

The Tigers rallied and tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third, thanks in part to a RBI hit by Johnson. Guffey scored the second run of the inning on a dropped fly ball.

Red Oak scored one more run in the fourth inning. The Knights scored nine runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to win the game via the 10-run mercy rule.

Johnson, Guffey, as well as Andrew Palmquist and Murphy Porter recorded the hits for Red Oak against Fremont-Mills.

The Tigers were scheduled to play Essex/South Page last Saturday, but the game was canceled because of inclement weather.

Red Oak was on the road to play Denison-Schleswig  in a doubleheader Tuesday night. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Thursday, Red Oak is back on the road as they take on the Glenwood Rams.

On Saturday, the Tigers will play Corning and Treynor at home.
