Red Oak's baseball season ends with semifinal loss to Clarinda

CLARINDA — After a win over Clarinda Academy in a first round game, the Red Oak Tigers’ season ended with a loss to Clarinda Tuesday night in the district tournament semifinal.

Clarinda scored in every inning they batted, including a four-run third, to beat Red Oak 10-0 in a five inning game.

Clarinda scored unearned runs in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, while their starting pitcher, Luke McClarnon, retired the Tiger’s offense without giving up a hit

Jackson Miller broke through with a shot off the base of the left field wall in the third, and a fielding error gave the Tigers a pair of base runners, both of which would be stranded.

Clarinda then added four more in the bottom of the inning, and won the game with two in the fourth and fifth innings as well.

McClarnon pitched all five innings, giving up just three hits and no walks, while striking out six Red Oak batters.

At the plate, Bryant Hummel led the offense with three hits in three at bats, driving home three runs as well. Austin Ascherl scored twice on a pair of singles and a walk, and McClarnon helped his own cause by scoring twice and stealing two bases.

Nick Crouse,  coming off a strong outing in the first round,  pitched the complete game for Red Oak, giving up six earned runs on eight hits. He walked four batters and struck out three.

At the plate, Miller led the offense with two hits in two at-bats, including a double down the third base line in the fourth.

Cody Walford accounted for the other Tiger hit.

Red Oak qualified for the semifinal game with a 7-2 win over Clarinda Academy in the first round game.
