RO’s McCunn earns Hawk-10 championship

The Red Oak grapplers competed in the Hawkeye 10 Conference wrestling tournament in Shenandoah on Saturday, Jan. 26, ending the day in seventh of 11 teams.
“Our team had set our expectations a little higher than we were able to accomplish today,” Red Oak head wrestling coach Tiegen Podliska said. “That means they see the work we’re putting in and think we should be placing higher than we are.”

Team scoring: 1- Atlantic 224; 2- Harlan 195.5; 3- Lewis Central 193; 4- Glenwood 174; 5- Creston/OM 170.5; 6- Kuemper Catholic 117; 7- Red Oak 114; 8- Clarinda 101.5; 9- Denison 32; 10- Shenandoah 31.5; 11- St. Albert 0.

“We lost a lot of swing matches today,” Podliska said. “We had a few kids wrestle to or above their seeds, but we also had several who didn’t. We didn’t have the match results we wanted to all the way through, but if you define success on improving in small areas that are going to benefit us in the future, then a lot of guys on our team were successful.”
They begin post season in Creston Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at noon.
