RO girls BB rolls to three wins; boys drop two

The Tiger girls basketball team soundly defeated Ar-We-Va 70-35 Monday, Jan. 21 in non-conference play.
Red Oak had six points on the board by three different Tigers before Ar-We-Va put up their first two, and the Tigers rolled on to a 15-5 first-quarter lead, with scores by five Tigers.
The second frame began on a Tiger 13-4 run as Red Oak continued to control the game, and the Tigers led 36-14 at the break.
The Tigers jumped out to a 9-2 run in the third frame, ending the period with a 52-15 lead, putting the game out of reach for the Rockets.
Elle Rengstorf scored 15 points to lead 10 Tigers in scoring. Rengstorf added three take-aways to her stat line.
Sophie Walker had eight points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals; Lexi Johnson had eight points; Kyndal Kells seven points, four rebounds; Chloe DeVries six points; Allie West six points, five rebounds, three steals; Chloe Johnson six points, six rebounds; Libby Mensen five points; and Kam Buntrock four points.

Boys
Cole Carlson and Carter Bruce got the Tigers rolling with back-to-back three-pointers, before falling to Ar-We-Va (15-0) 74-49.
Isaac Birt paced the Tiger scoring with 13 points, followed by David Vega and Garrett Couse with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Carlson had eight points, Bruce three, and Garrett Rolenc two.
Kobe Johnson grabbed four rebounds, two steals, Rolenc three rebounds, and Vega two steals.
St. Albert
The Red Oak girls team defeated St. Albert 60-54 Thursday, Jan. 24 on the road.
After a quick 22-9 first-quarter start, the Tigers headed into the break leading 33-24. St. Albert continued to rally in the third frame, closing the gap to within five at the end of the quarter. The Tigers outscored St. Albert by one point to hold onto the lead for the win.
Walker led three Tigers in double figure scoring with 14, along with Rengstorf and Kells with 13 and 10, respectively.
Walker added three rebounds, five assists, four steals, one block; Rengstorf five rebounds, three steals; and Kells six rebounds.
C. Johnson had nine points, five rebounds; Kate Carlson four points, two rebounds, one block; West four points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals; L. Johnson four points, two rebounds, one steal; and Buntrock chipped in two points.
Atlantic
“Red Oak’s defense was much improved,” Pollock said. “Fifty-seven points given up is the third lowest this season for the Tigers. Unfortunately a slow offensive start in the first half created too big a hole to climb out.”
The Tiger boys only scored eight points in the first frame to Atlantic’s 14, off a Birt two-pointer, and two three-pointers from Vega.
The Tigers continued to roll slowly in the second frame with Ryan Johnson scoring a free throw as the only points in the first seven minutes of play.
Red Oak’s rally began in the final minute before halftime with six quick points to close the gap to 30-15.
Both teams added 13 points in the third quarter, and Red Oak outscored the Trojans by five in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.
“The boys kept up their energy despite the slow offensive start, trimming the final margin to 10, which is much closer than the 61-34 difference when the same teams met up the second game of the season,” Pollock said.
Vega exploded with 12 points for the Tigers, followed by Birt with nine, and Carlson with seven, all in the second half.
The bench provided a lift with Bergren adding seven points, R. Johnson with three points, and Couse with two.
The Tigers host Shenandoah for the rivalry rematch tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Girls
Red Oak girls defeated Atlantic 66-47 in conference action Friday, Jan. 25, on the road.
The Tiger girls were up by two at the end of the first, but took a 33-16 lead into the half with a strong second quarter.
No further stats were available.
The girls travel to Shenandoah tonight.
