Scrimmage Tip-Off

RED OAK—The Red Oak Tigers girls’ basketball team took part in the Iowa Hall of Pride Scrimmage against the Corning Red Raiders, last Tuesday night at the Red Oak High School gym.

Corning won the scrimmage 33-28. Both teams stayed close the entire scrimmage. Jesse Hemphill led the Tigers in scoring with 11 points for the scrimmage.
“We got to play with more passion and heart, and be ready to control the other team defensively,” Head Coach Shelley Becker said.
The two teams were able to use the scrimmage as a “regulation game-like scenario, under normal game circumstances” according to the Iowa Hall of Pride. To take part in the scrimmages, the schools needed to register a service project or projects that student-athletes take part in. Both schools are now eligible for statewide recognition and service awards.
The scrimmages occurred all across the state, at 29 different locations.
Proceeds from the games will be donated to the Richard Jacobson Education Fund at the Iowa Hall of Pride. Red Oak and Corning had their own projects. For Red Oak, they had “Save Our Theater,” which involves student-athletes volunteering at the local theater to help keep it open for Red Oak. Corning had Coaches vs. cancer and the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital Corning Branch C-Pink organization, which has the goal of providing transportation stipends to women diagnosed with breast cancer in the community.
Tuesday nights event raised $250.
The two games do not count on Red Oak’s record because they were both scrimmages. Most of the team is still coming off of the state volleyball run from earlier in the month.
“We’re starting out almost a week later than every other basketball team that didn’t make it to the state volleyball tournament,” Becker said. “We got some major work to do in the next week to be ready to roll.”
Red Oak finished the 2009-10 season with a 5-17 record. While they lost their leading scorer in Ingvild Skorpen, they have their leading rebounder back in Gabi French. The team fields only one senior in this year’s squad, with guard McKaela Magnesen.
They open up the regular season at home Tuesday night when they face Fremont-Mills.
