Southwest Valley takes third at POI track meet

 GREENFIELD — The Southwest Valley boys track team finished third at last Monday’s Pride of Iowa track meet at Nodaway Valley High School.

The Timberwolves finished with a score of 70 points. Mount Ayr won the meet with 133 points and Pleasantville was second.

Southwest Valley had two wins at the Pride of Iowa meet, both in hurdles races. 

Tony Klocke provided the big highlight with a conference title in the 110-meter high hurdles. 

Klocke won by one-hundredth of a second over Central Decatur’s Peyton Pedersen as the junior ran a time of 15.73. Teammate Colten Drake was third with a time of 16.08.

Both Drake and Klocke were in the shuttle hurdle relays as they won a conference title with a time of 1:02.72. 

Trevor Sorensen and Scott Vanderhoof were also part of the shuttle hurdle relay team.

Drake was the runner-up in the shot put as he tossed 45’2”. Only Joe Ricker of Mount Ayr finished ahead with 47.1.5”.

Vanderhoof also had a second-place finish as he jumped 5’8” in the high jump.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Sorensen (59.82) was second behind the winner of the race, Grant Staats of Mount Ayr.

In the 800, Wyatt McAlpin was third with a time of 2:11.99. McAlpin was behind both Kyle Dolecheck and Trevor Anderson of Mount Ayr.

The 4x200 (McAlpin, Chance Cobb, Sorensen and Vanderhoof) and the 4x800 (McAlpin, Bryan Pearson, Lane Peterson and Phillip Currin) had fourth-place finishes.

Girls

The girls didn’t have a conference champion, as they took eighth with 33 points at last Monday’s meet. Nodaway Valley was first with 109 points.

The best finishes came courtesy of Elizabeth Herzberg and Shanna Saunders. Herzberg was second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.16. 

Saunders was second in the discus with 89’6”.

The best relay race finish came in the 4x800 when the team of Kelsey Means, Diana Berggren, Kendra Top and Elizabeth Fuller took third with a time of 11:25.20.

The shuttle hurdle team had a fifth place finish as Dezirae Archer, Payton Thomas, Saunders and Herzberg ran 1:15.65.

Also finishing fifth was the sprint medley team as Kaylea Wiechman, Miah Hummell, Oakley Goodvin and Means ran 2:07.10.

The 4x200 (Wiechman, Fuller, Renee Williams and Goodvin) and the 4x400 (Goodvin, Herzberg, Fuller and Means) teams both had sixth-place finishes.
