Special election to fill state House seat set

Voters in Mills, Fremont, and most of Montgomery County will go to the polls Tuesday, Feb. 10, to choose a replacement for Mark Costello.

Steve Adams (D-Red Oak) and David Sieck (R-Glenwood) are listed on the ballot after winning their respective parties nomination at a convention Jan. 23.

In Montgomery County, polls will be open from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. at the following locations: Red Oak Gold Fair Building, Red Oak Fire Station, Red Oak First Christian Church, Elliott Community Building and Grant Fire Station.

The auditor’s office will be open Saturday, Feb. 7, from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for absentee voting.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed is Friday at 5 p.m. Absentee request forms are available at montgomerycountyiowa.com or at the Auditor’s office. Request forms will have to be completed prior to receiving an absentee ballot.

Voters in the county’s southern four townships (West, Grant, Scott and East) are not part of House District 23 and will not be participating in the special election. This includes the communities of Stanton, Villisca and Coburg.

After getting elected to a second term in November, 2014, Costello resigned as District 23 representative after winning a special election to serve the remaining two years on Joni Ernst’s term in the Iowa senate.
