Sports Calendar: Feb. 1
We're finally in February, which means we're rounding the corner on the way to the end of the regular season.
The Red Oak basketball teams look to keep strong Friday night when they hit the road to face the Creston Panthers.
Red Oak's boys team is looking to win its seventh straight game. Their last loss was Jan. 11 against Atlantic. So far in 2013, the boys team is 9-1. They're currently fifth, just a game behind Harlan, in the Hawkeye Ten standings. They'll play a Creston team that has won four straight.
In the girls match-up, the Dan Martinez led team looks to complete the regular season sweep of Creston. They're 4-3 since Jan. 11. The Tigers have had close games as of late against Shenandoah, Harlan, Tri-Center and Stanton. The Creston girls meanwhile haven't played in a week. They're coming off a loss to Denison-Schleswig last Friday.
Red Oak won the first match-up 64-31. The girls will play first at 6 p.m., with the boys game taking place afterward.
The big game of the night will take place in Villisca as the Villisca boys host the Sidney Cowboys in a game that could determine the regular season champions of the Corner Conference.
Sidney enters the game with an undefeated conference record. Villisca's lone conference loss was to Fremont-Mills. The Blue Jays are the highest scoring team in the conference, averaging 66.7 per game.
Jacob Cain, Noah McKeever and Nicholas Shipley lead the way for Sidney. Cain and Shipley each average double-digit points per game. Cain is also the team's leading rebounder as he averages 9.5 boards per game.
This game will be the second of a doubleheader.
The girls game will tip off first at 6:15 p.m. Villisca's girls team will try to rebound from their loss Tuesday night against Stanton. The loss in fact snapped an eight-game winning streak. The Cowgirls meanwhile have lost three in a row.
Stanton will be on the road Friday night as they play a doubleheader against the Essex teams. The Viqueens kick off the doubleheader first with a game against Essex/South Page. Stanton has won three straight since the Corner Conference tournament and look to get the regular season sweep against Essex/South Page.
In the boys match-up, the Vikings look to snap a four-game losing skid. They'll play a Trojans team that also has had struggles as of late. The first game tips off at 6:15 p.m.
Elsewhere, East Mills and Fremont-Mills face off in a doubleheader Friday night. The girls game starts first at 6:15 p.m. with the boys to follow. In the girls game, Fremont-Mills already has the regular season title wrapped up. However, a win against East Mills would give them an undefeated conference regular season record. They'll play an East Mills team coming off a close win against Sidney Tuesday night.
In the boys game, both Fremont-Mills and East Mills are in a fight for third place in the Corner Conference standings. The Wolverines won the first game Dec. 11 and they'll try for the sweep.
Finally, the Griswold basketball teams travel to Audubon to take part in a doubleheader against the Wheelers. The first game starts at 6 p.m.
