Sports Calendar: January 31/February 1

1 p.m. UPDATE: Because of the weather concerns, the Stanton varsity basketball doubleheader versus Fremont-Mills will now start at 5 p.m. The girls play first, with the boys to follow. The Stanton/Fremont-Mills junior varsity games have been canceled.

We've reached the final day in January (and sure enough, we have snow). There is plenty of sports action planned for Friday, as well as Saturday.

Both Red Oak basketball teams will be in action tonight as the boys basketball team will be home, while the girls go on the road. The teams face off against Atlantic, with both games scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Meanwhile, the Stanton basketball teams will be home Friday night for a doubleheader against Fremont-Mills. The action starts at 6 p.m. when the girls face off in a rematch of the Corner Conference championship game from last Friday.

The Essex basketball teams will be on the road Friday night as they take on South Page. It starts at 6 p.m. with the girls game.

East Mills will also be on the road Friday night as they take part in a doubleheader against Sidney. The first game starts at 6 p.m. with the girls. The boys game, which is a rematch of the Corner Conference championship game from last Saturday, will tip-off shortly after the conclusion of the girls game.

In Pride of Iowa action, the Southwest Valley Timberwolves will be home for a basketball doubleheader against Interstate 35. The first game starts at 6:15 p.m. with the girls game.

Finally, the Griswold basketball teams will be on the road for Western Iowa Conference action against IKM-Manning. Tip-off for the girls game will be 6 p.m., with the boys game to follow shortly after.

Saturday

The big event for Saturday will be the Hawkeye 10 Wrestling Tournament in Denison.

Red Oak will be one of the schools competing in the tournament.

Tanner Mertz was the lone Hawkeye 10 conference champion, last season, winning it at 106 lbs. Thursday night, Mertz won his 100th and 101st career match for Red Oak.

The Hawkeye 10 tournament is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start.

Elsewhere, the Griswold wrestling team heads to Guthrie Center for a wrestling tournament.

In addition, the East Mills and Southwest Valley wrestling teams will go to Audubon for a tournament. The tournament starts at 10 a.m.
