Timberwolves BB sweep Griswold
The Southwest Valley Timberwolves basketball teams entered Griswold on Monday, Nov. 29, to open the season, and left with a sweep.
Timberwolf girls got the ball rolling with a 52-22 rout, leading the entire game. The Timberwolves used a full court press that caused havoc to the Tigers offense, and were able to capitalize on many of the 36 forced turnovers. SWV combined for 25 steals.
Maggie Haer lead the scoring with 16 points for SWV, and added three rebounds, six assists, and nine steals.
SWV stats: Norah Lund eight points, five steals; Charlee Larsen seven points; Ryanne Mullen six points; Rebecca Wetzel six points, six rebounds; Lindsay Maurer five points; Kayla Mitchell two points; Sadie Groszkrueger two points.
Griswold stats: McKenna Wiechman 13 points, five rebounds; Brenna Rossell six points, 14 rebounds, four assists, three steals, three blocks; Abby Tye three points; Karly Millikan 10 rebounds, three steals; Emma Mundorf five rebounds; Maddy Main one rebound.
Boys
SWV boys rolled to a 58-38 victory over Griswold after being up by just one point at the end of the first period. “Our defense did set a tone for us and the guys played with a lot of energy,” SWV head boys basketball coach Kyle Bashor said. “The press was able to get turnovers, and in the half court we were able to get a lot of deflections and keep them uncomfortable.
“Offensively, we would have liked to convert more of those steals into points, opportunities we expect to be able to score. Give Griswold credit, they stayed right in the game and never allowed us to pull away.”
Gabe Fuller led the SWV charge, finishing with 17 points, seven steals, and four assists. Joey Oathoudt added 15 points, seven rebounds.
Griswold was led by Kamron Brownlee, who hit four treys and finished with 18 points.
Griswold stats: Adam Houser 10 points, two assists; Landon Pelzer six points, two steals, one block; Aiden Kennedy three points, two blocks; eight rebunds; Zane Johnson one point; Caleb Oakleaf eight rebounds; Peyton Cook two steals.
Shenandoah
The Timberwolves hosted Shenandoah the following evening, spliting wins.
Southwest Valley girls fell 54-46 in a tough battle that had the Timberwolves within three at the end of the third period.
Lund led the T’Wolves scoring with 18 points, and she finished with two assists and two steals.
SWV stats: Haer 12 points, five rebounds, three assists; Larsen four points, four rebounds; Wetzel four points, three rebounds; Mullen four points, two rebounds; Maurer two points; Mitchell two points.
Boys
SWV defeated Shenandoah in boys play 56-27. Fuller led the Timberwolves with 14 points, three steals.
SWV stats: Owen Wilkinson 13 points, five steals; Sawyer Hensley four points, four assists, six steals.
Mt. Ayr
SWV girls fell 53-44, to Mount Ayr, dropping to 1-2 on the season, and 0-1 in the conference.

Boys
The Timberwolves fell to Pride of Iowa foe Mount Ayr 61-40, dropping to 2-1 on the season.
Joey Oathoudt completed another double-digit scoring game with 13 points. He secured eight rebounds and three steals in the loss.
Stats: Wilkinson eight points, two steals; Thomas six points, five rebounds; Fuller six points, one steal; Sawyer Hensley four points, three rebounds, seven assists, three steals; Roman Keefe three points; Caleb Pearson one rebound; Isaac Currin one steal.
Both teams travel to Nodaway Valley to take on the Wolverines tonight beginning with the girls tip at 6 p.m. and the boys game to follow.
