Viqueens sink Crusaders, Cowgirls

Stanton opened the basektball season on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at home with a non-conference double-header against Coon Rapids-Bayard, splitting wins with the Crusaders.

The Viqueens opened the season at home with a 53-35 win, leading by two after the first period before rolling to a 29-14 lead at the halftime and putting the game out of reach at the end of the third period, leading 41-22.

“We were getting the shots we wanted, we just struggled to knock them down,” Stanton head girls basketball caoch Dave Snyder said.  

Seven Viqueens rotated play throughout the game, giving the Queens stamina for an aggressive defense that lasted all game.

Abby Burke finished with 19 points coming on five treys, four in the first half, to lead the scoring. She also had three rebounds and one steal.

Stanton stats: Jenna Stephens 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two blocks; Marleigh Johnson 11 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, six steals; Leah Sandin six points, three rebounds, three steals; Brooklyn Silva two points, three steals, two rebounds; Riley Burke two points, two steals; Olson six rebounds.

The Vikings fell 65-52 after leading by five at halftime. 

The Crusaders made the needed adjustments and began the third quarter with a 19-0 run. At the end of the third quarter, CR-B led 53-37. The Vikings never gave up and got within 10 points, but could not rally for the win.

Carter Johnson paced the Vikings, earning his first double-double of the season with 25 points and 12 rebounds. He finished with one assist and one steal.

Stanton stats: Nolan Grebin 12 points, one rebound; Quentin Thornburg seven points, five rebounds, four steals; Evan Gettler five points, two steals; Logan Roberts three points, three rebounds, four steals; Tristan Frank one rebound; Levi Martin two rebounds; Josh Martin three rebounds, three assists.

Sidney

Stanton traveled to Sidney for Corner Conference openers for both girls and boys and came away splitting wins.

 The Viqueens routed Sidney (1-2) 61-32.

 The Queens led 16-8 at the end of the first period and more than doubled their lead by the halftime, leading 32-15.

Johnson led three Queens in double-digit scoring, finishing with 20 points. She added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, three blocks in the win.

Stanton stats: Stephens 15 points, seven rebounds; A. Burke 13 points, eight rebounds; Silva four points, two rebounds; Olson four points, two rebounds, two steals; Sandin two points; Carly Roberts two points, one rebound; R. Burke one point.

The Vikings fell 76-38 to the Cowboys, struggling with shooting, and finishing the night with a mere 24.1% efficiency on field goals. The Vikings trailed 43-14 at the half.

Gettler led the charge with 13 points. He added three rebounds, two steals to his stat line.

Stanton travels to Griswold tonight for a Corner Conference double-header beginning with the girls tip at 6 p.m. and the boys game to follow.

JV

The Queens opened up the season with a 33-23 win over CR-B. Hannah Olson led the team with 16 points and Lauren Johnson added a dozen.
