Stanton splits doubleheader vs FM
TABOR — The Stanton Viqueens won Friday night against the Fremont-Mills Knights, 56-38, to get to 5-4 for the season.
The Viqueens jumped out to an early lead, holding the Knights scoreless for the first five minutes. Fremont-Mills would score and take the lead late in the first quarter, until Sara Sederburg hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Viqueens the 11-9 lead.
“They had a nice little comeback. We did have a nice start and they responded well,” Viqueens Head Coach Bruce Subbert said.
From there, Stanton’s defense allowed only four points in the second quarter as they led at halftime, 30-13.
“In the first half, I thought we did a lot of good things offensively and defensively,” Subbert said. “I thought we were moving the ball really well.”
The Viqueens kept their foot on the pedal in the second half, outscoring the Knights in both quarters.
Four Viqueen players finished with 10 or more points in the game. Rachel Sorensen was 6-for-10 for the game, scoring 13 points to lead Stanton. Her 10 rebounds gave the junior a double-double, which is Sorensen’s first this season.
Ragen Anderson and Sederburg both scored 12 points for the Viqueens. Sederberg was the only player off the bench to score double-digit points.
Kara Allen scored 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting, with four rebounds and two assists. Carmen Subbert scored three points for the Viqueens, but led the team in rebounding with 13 boards.
Boys
The Stanton Vikings lost the second game of the doubleheader Friday night, 72-37. Both teams struggled to score early, combining for 12 points (Fremont-Mills 9, Stanton 3), in the first quarter.
Both teams were able to score in the second quarter, but Stanton still trailed at halftime, 30-18. The Vikings scored only 19 points in the second half, while Fremont-Mills posted 42.
Greg Focht finished the game as the leading scorer with eight points. Greg Marshall scored seven points, while Jeff Marshall and Austin Becthold each scored five.
Both Stanton teams played Monday night in Council Bluffs against Heartland Christian. Results weren’t available as of press time. Both teams will be home Tuesday night to play Nishnabotna and will be on the road again Friday night to face Clarinda Academy, before the Corner Conference Tournament starts.
