Stanton stumbles against Essex/South Page

ESSEX — The Stanton Vikings baseball team lost to the Essex Trojans on Friday night, 13-3.

The last time Stanton played Essex/South Page, the Trojans came out on top, 23-13 on June 3.

Essex jumped out a 4-0 lead after the first two innings.

Stanton scored their first run when Collin Strickland led off the inning with a triple and scored in the next at-bat thanks to a dropped flyball.

Essex responded in the bottom half of the third with a RBI groundout.

The Vikings fought back as  John Mainquist scored on a RBI single by Andrew Cerven.

Essex scored four more runs to take a 9-2 lead.

Pinch-runner Kyle Peterson scored the final run on a single by Cade Confer.

The Trojans scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead and win by the 10-run rule.

Stanton is now 3-11 for the season.

Stanton lost to the East Mills Wolverines in Malvern, last Tuesday, 10-9.

East Mills jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never gave up the lead.

The Vikings once again moved well on the base paths as they stole 17 bases.

Stanton had established the season high of 18 steals against Clarinda Academy three days earlier.

Tyler Walter was 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI and a season-best five stolen bases.

Cade Confer was the next closest in the stolen base category as he finished the game with four.

Jared Meisinger scored two runs for the Vikings, as he finished the game 1-for-4, with his only hit being a double.

Andrew Cerven was credited with the loss. Cerven pitched the complete game, giving up 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits and struck out nine.

Cerven was also 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Vikings are home on Tuesday to play the Fremont-Mills Knights.
Stanton lost to the Knights, 16-1 on June 7.

On Thursday, Stanton travels to Farragut to take on Nishnabotna.
Stanton already has a victory against the Warriors this season and will look for the regular season weep.
