SWV splits softball week

 The Southwest Valley softball team finished the week 2-2, thanks to wins over Red Oak and East Union last week.

The most recent win came Thursday night when they defeated East Union 17-11 in Afton.

Southwest Valley gave up six runs in the second inning, losing their 5-2 lead. They recovered though with seven runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning.

The top four batters in the line-up for Southwest Valley all finished the game 3-for-5.

Ashtyn Grossnickle had three runs scored and a double in the lead-off spot. Danica Sunderman also scored three runs to go with her three hits, including a home run.

Kelsie Kinman also had a double and three runs scored.

Sydney Pontius had two runs scored and a double to go with her three hits.

Kiara Roberts was 2-for-4, while Kim Hults, Allie Bronner and Dakota Sleep were 1-for-4 and Lexi Bronner was 1-for-5.

The other win came Wednesday versus Red Oak, 12-0 in 2 1/2 innings.

The Timberwolves scored the bulk of their runs (nine) in the second inning.

Bronner led the way by going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Kinman, Sunderman and Sleep all picked up hits in the win.

Martensdale-St. Marys 14, Southwest Valley 4

The most recent loss came Friday night in five innings. Martensdale-St. Marys scored four runs in the fifth to ensure it would win via the mercy rule.

Sunderman was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Sydney Pontius meanwhile was 2-for-3 with a double.

Nodaway Valley 13, Southwest Valley 2

The week began for Southwest Valley last Tuesday with a mercy rule loss.

Nodaway Valley scored two runs in the fifth to clinch the win.

Grossnickle, Kinman, Pontius and Sleep had the hits for Southwest Valley.

Grossnickle was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Sleep scored the other run as she went 1-for-1.

Southwest Valley was set to face Stanton Monday night. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Southwest Valley is home Tuesday night when they play host to Bedford, scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
