Tigers place eighth at final home meet

RED OAK — The Red Oak boys track team picked up one win in their final home meet for 2015 Friday as they took eighth out of 10 teams competing at the Red Oak Tiger Relays at the Dick Morrison Track.

Red Oak recorded a team score of 23 points, finishing ahead of both Creston and Woodbine. Glenwood won the meet with a score of 128.

The highlight win for Red Oak came in the 1,600 when Logan LeRette held off Atlantic’s Jaxon Eden to run a time of 4:42.97 and get the win on senior night.

“They’re all nerve-wracking, but they’re fun and I love them,” LeRette said.

LeRette worked his way to the front from the middle of the pack and soon found himself in a battle for first with Eden, who is a freshman.

“He’s really smart running that first lap slow because all those guys were coming in at 64-65 seconds for the first lap, which is nuts because your splits are supposed to stay even,” LeRette said about Eden. “He kept them even and he was pretty smart.”

LeRette’s time is his season best as it moves him to the top of the Treynor district list, ahead of Shenandoah’s Joe Blake. The time also moves him to the top of the conference list. LeRette’s focus is now on the Hawkeye 10 meet, which will take place in Glenwood Thursday. The senior has a chance to win his first conference championship.

“[I just need] just to stay focused, keep training the right way and keep doing things the Line 6 Tiger way,” LeRette said.

The other highlight for Red Oak was a second place finish for Gabe Nelson in the high jump. Nelson took second as he jumped 6’, which is his personal best. Joey Walker of Atlantic won the event with a jump of 6’3”.

Noah Roberts had the other individual finish as he took sixth with a time of 12:11.33 in the 3,200.

The best relay finish for Red Oak came in the 4x100 when Hayden VanMeter, Dylan Graber, Eli Guerra and Brock Isaacson ran a 47.38 to take fifth.

VanMeter, Graber, Rob Vial and Guerra took sixth in the 4x200 with a time of 1:37.66.

The distance medley team also had a sixth place finish as VanMeter, Isaacson, Vial and LeRette ran 3:56.42.

Mount Ayr meet

LeRette picked up another win earlier in the week last Tuesday at Mount Ayr in the 1,600. LeRette ran a time of 4:44.29 to edge out Nodaway Valley’s Jared Corder at the finish line.

It was the only win for Red Oak as they finished eighth in the Class A division with 30 points at the Raider Relays.

LeRette was also the anchor leg for the distance medley team as he, VanMeter, Isaacson and Vial took second with  3:55.26.

The 4x200 team of VanMeter, Graber, Vial and Isaacson took third with 1:37.52. The 4x100 team of VanMeter, Graber, Guerra and Isaacson took fourth (46.73), while the 4x400 team of Vial, Clay Selberg, LeRette and Isaacson finished fifth (3:49.33).

Southwest Valley also competed in Class A as they took fifth. Scott Vanderhoof had the highlight with a win in the high jump. Vanderhoof jumped 5’10” to get the win. Tony Klocke had the other win when he ran 15.90 to take first in the 110-meter hurdles.

Essex also competed at the Mount Ayr meet as they took eighth in the Class B division with 23 points. Cody McClintock had the highlight when he took first in the 1,600 with a time of 4:52.27.
