Trojanettes stay competitive in Corner Conference
ESSEX — The Essex Trojanettes scored another big Corner Conference win Thursday night when they completed the regular season sweep of the Sidney Cowgirls, winning 10-3, at Essex.
Essex struck early by taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Regan Burns helped the Trojanettes draw first blood with a RBI single that scored Skylar Ross. Seana Perkins followed that up a couple at bats later with an RBI double. Following a run scored on a wild pitch, Sara Skalberg drove in another run via a groundout.
Haley Fundermann scored a run in the third inning to extend the Essex lead 5-0. Sidney scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning to cut the Trojanette lead to two runs.
Essex responded with three additional runs in bottom of the fifth. Ross scored the first run of the inning on an RBI groundout.
Fundermann scored her next run thanks to a bunt single, which led to a bad throw to home plate. Essex tacked on another run thanks to a bunt groundout, which scored Tessie Lindburg.
Burns contributed once again in the bottom of the sixth with a two RBI single, to give Essex the 10-3 lead.
Fundermann, the winning pitcher, had shut down the offensive output by Sidney and picked up her 13th win of the season.
Essex's record following the Sidney win was 13-8 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
Essex's offense stepped up big for them during the last week. Last Tuesday, they defeated the East Mills Wolverines, 20-13, in Malvern.
East Mills took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the lead would be exchanged during the third inning.
After a two run second inning, Essex scored seven in the third to lead 9-4. East Mills responded in the bottom half of the inning with six runs to take a 10-9 lead. The key difference was the fourth inning when Essex scored five runs to take the lead and never look back.
Four Trojanettes finished the game with three hits, as well as multiple runs and runs batted in.
Fundermann, Burns, Perkins and Andrea Allen all recorded three hits in the win. Perkins was 3-for-4 with four runs scored. All the Trojanettes in the starting line-up recorded a hit.
On June 18, Essex defeated Riverside 12-0 in four innings. Fundermann pitched a two hit shutout, striking out four batters in the process and not allowing a walk.
Fundermann was also 1-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and two more batted in.
