UPDATE: Sports Calendar: January 2
Jan. 3 Update: Tonight's JV/varsity girls basketball doubleheader between Red Oak and Treynor will start at 5 p.m. JV will play first, followed by varsity.
Happy new year, everybody! We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday.
Believe it or not, the high school sports season starts up again for Friday night.
It's certainly the case in Red Oak as both basketball teams look to start the 2015 year with wins. It's all part of a varsity doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. at Red Oak High School.
The girls game tips off first. Red Oak entered the break with a five-game winning streak. At 6-1, the Tigers cruised through the early part of their season.
Glenwood meanwhile enters the girls match-up with a 4-3 record. They won two straight to close out 2014.
The boys game will follow shortly after the conclusion of the girls game. Red Oak entered the break with a 2-4 record. They held off Clarinda late to get the win Dec. 19 before the holiday break.
Glenwood also entered the holiday break with a 2-4 record. They lost two straight to close out 2014.
The only other area doubleheader on the calendar for Friday night takes place in Malvern as East Mills hosts Griswold.
In the girls match-up, East Mills is 4-3 for the season and is coming off a 37-36 win Dec. 19 at Stanton. Griswold meanwhile has struggled, losing six straight. Their lone win of the year came Dec. 1 at Southwest Valley. The girls game starts first at 6 p.m.
In the boys match-up, East Mills entered the break with a three-game winning streak to close out the 2014 year. They're 5-1 thus far in the season, the lone blemish a loss to Fremont-Mills.
Griswold struggled in the December portion of their season. They have two wins (Southwest Valley and Logan-Magnolia). The Tigers went on a four-game losing skid to close out 2014.
Both teams no doubt would like to start 2015 with wins.
There are other interesting doubleheaders going on around the area for Friday night. Clarinda and Shenandoah face off in Shenandoah. Meanwhile, Atlantic and Kuemper Catholic face off, but at separate sites. The boys game will be in Atlantic, while the girls face off in Carroll.
Saturday Note
The Red Oak girls basketball team is scheduled to play Saturday night at home versus Treynor in a JV/varsity doubleheader. As of now, the game is still on and will start first with JV at 6 p.m.
