Villisca remains undefeated on season
VILLISCA—The Villisca girls’ basketball team will enter Tuesday night’s game against Stanton with an undefeated record.
The Blue Jays had a strong win Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Shenandoah Fillies 59-39 at home.
“I’m pleased, we showed a lot of patience tonight and very few turnovers,” Villisca girls basketball coach Donna Williams said. “That was a good thing.”
Villisca pulled ahead in the first quarter thanks to points by Jill Vanderhoof and Morganne Haer. The duo scored all 12 of the Blue Jays first quarter points as they led 12-5.
Villisca added to their lead and were up by as much as eight points in the second quarter. Shenandoah rallied and was able to get the Villisca lead down to four points. Villisca scored and halted the rally as they led 26-21 at halftime.
The third quarter remained in favor of Villisca as they were able to hold onto the lead thanks to Haer and Vanderhoof scoring a combined 13 points.
Villisca was able to pull away in the fourth quarter, holding the Fillies to four points.
“We changed our offense a little bit, but I think also we were more conscious of blocking out and controlling the boards,” Williams said. “We had a lot of easy shots that we missed in the first and second quarter and they went down the rest of that second half.”
Vanderhoof finished the game as the leading scorer and rebounder, recording 17 points on 8-for-18 shooting with 10 rebounds, giving the senior a double-double. Haer scored 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including 2-for-3 from three-point range.
Amanda Focht had 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting and had eight rebounds, as well as two blocks.
Jenny King had four points and Bree Ann Fisher scored two.
Villisca 78, Clarinda Academy 14
The Blue Jays made quick work out of Clarinda Academy, winning 78-14 at home last Tuesday. Villisca jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. By halftime, Villisca was up 43-9.
Haer, Vanderhoof and Focht each scored 14 points in the win. Both Vanderhoof and Focht had nine rebounds, with Vanderhoof recording six assists.
Mikayla Dolch had nine points, Heather Means scored seven and Lexi Bronner scored six.
Villisca will be home Tuesday night when they host the Stanton Viqueens at 6:15 p.m. The Blue Jays won two of three meetings against Stanton last season. The lone loss was in the championship game of the Corner Conference tournament. Both wins by Villisca were by three points.
Friday night, Villisca will be on the road as they play the Nishnabotna Blue Devils.
