Viqueens get revenge against Trojannettes

ESSEX — The Stanton Viqueens defeated the Essex Trojannettes on Friday night, winning 5-3 in Essex.

The previous time the two teams faced each other, the game ended in a 16-13 slugfest in favor of the Trojannettes.

“We just had some timely hitting and we were able to edge it out tonight,” Viqueens Head Coach Jason Lura said. “Essex is a greatly improved team from a year ago and hats off to them.”

Stanton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to hits by Kadie and Carmen Subbert, as well as Shelby Wagg.

“That’s one thing we talked about before we got on the bus today, we need to go over to Essex and have no slow start, we needed a fast start right away,” Lura said.

The Trojannettes responded by scoring a run in the first half of their inning.

Stanton had a runner in scoring position in the third inning, but a fielder’s choice and lineout to third base ended the opportunity.
After the defense held, the offense responded by posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 3-3.

Haley Fundermann led off the inning with a single, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, before scoring on a Tessie Lindburg single.

Lindburg’s run tied the game, thanks to an RBI single by Regan Burns.

Essex had a runner in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Kadie Subbert snagged a line drive and tagged the runner at second to end the inning.

“It was a heads-up play, catching that ball and then tapping on second,” Lura said.

Stanton used the momentum in the sixth to re-claim the lead.
Rachel Sorensen led off the inning with a single. Sorenson stole second, following a pop-up out by Kimber Wagg.

Ragen Anderson was then hit by a pitch. The runners did a double steal to move into scoring position.

Roey Sink then hit a groundball, however due to throwing errors, both Sorensen and Anderson scored.

“I think we’re pretty evenly matched,” Lura said. “When one team makes a couple errors and swings momentum, sometimes that’s going to be the key to the game and I think it was tonight.”
Kadie and Carmen Subbert were each 2-for-4 at the plate, each scoring a run.

Sink pitched the complete game, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out two.

“I think both teams settled down, played excellent defense and excellent pitching all the way around,” Lura said.

This might not be the final time this season the two teams play.
Essex has a Regional play-in game against Bedford on July 6 with the opportunity to play Stanton the next night.

“That’s what I said to their coach, I said we’ll probably see you in a couple of weeks,” Lura said. “We’ll have to settle the season series, the rubber match, in a couple of weeks.”

Stanton defeated East Mills last Tuesday, 10-0 in five innings.  
Roey Sink gave up one hit and no runs in five innings of work.
Sink also struck out six batters, while walking four.

The Viqueens had three hits and five walks the entire game.
The three hits came from Shelby and Kimber Wagg, as well as Peterson.

Both Waggs each scored two runs to contribute to the Viqueen victory.

Kadie Subbert was the only other Viqueen to score two runs against the Wolverines.

Stanton is home Tuesday night to take on the Fremont-Mills Knights.
The Viqueens will no doubt look to avenge their previous loss to the Knights, which occurred June 7.

“We’re looking to play a little better,” Lura said. “Our girls are going to fight and battle and hopefully try and give them a contest.”

Thursday, the Viqueens travel to Farragut to take on Nishnabotna.

The Viqueens will look to go for the regular season sweep.
Stanton defeated Nishnabotna, 2-1 in extra innings on June 9.

Stanton has their final home game Friday night when they face Thomas Jefferson.
