Viqueens pick up wins at Waukee tournament

WAUKEE—The Stanton Viqueens picked up a couple of wins during the Waukee Tournament Saturday.

Stanton defeated Des Moines Lincoln and Panorama, but lost to Waukee and Urbandale.

The Viqueens win against Panorama was 21-12 and 21-7. Stanton had nine kills with only 20 attack attempts. Carmen Subbert led the team with six kills out of 10 attack attempts, with four digs. Erin DeKay had the other two kills, while Moriah Kammerer had one.

Stanton was 31-for-35 serving in the match versus Panorama with six aces. Haley Weis was responsible for five aces as she was 14-for-15.

The Viqueens score against Des Moines Lincoln was 21-9 and 21-5. Subbert had a game high of nine kills and five digs. Heidi Vanderholm had the second most kills, recording four.

Stanton had nine total blocks in the win, with four coming courtesy of DeKay.

Macy Elwood was responsible for 14 of the team’s 19 assists versus Abraham Lincoln.

Stanton fell short versus Waukee 21-15 and 21-13. The Viqueens had seven kills in the loss to Waukee. Subbert led with four kills, while Vanderholm had two and DeKay recorded one.

The score versus Urbandale was 25-9 and 25-17. Subbert had six kills and seven digs to lead the Viqueens. Vanderholm and DeKay each had a kill.

Stanton finished second in their pool, going 2-1. The loss to Urbandale occurred in the tournament round.

Waukee, Des Moines-Lincoln and Urbandale all play in Class 5A, while Panorama plays in 2A.

Urbandale is ranked seventh in Class 5A in the latest IGHSAU volleyball poll.

This was Stanton’s first appearance at the Waukee Tournament.

Stanton 3, Essex 0

The Viqueens began the week with a 3-0 victory on the road last Tuesday versus the Essex Trojanettes.

Stanton won 25-14, 25-5 and 25-17.

Subbert had a big match for Stanton, getting 14 kills out of 21 attack attempts. DeKay and Heidi Vanderholm each had four kills, while Weis and Kammerer both had three.

Stanton had a big night defensively with 13 blocks. DeKay led the team in blocks as she had five (two solo).

Elwood meanwhile led the team in assists with 16.

Essex had eight kills out of 43 attack attempts in the match versus Stanton.

Regan Burns had the most kills for Essex, getting three out of 13 attack attempts with four digs.

Kym Graham and Jescenia Mosley each had two kills, while Amber Ohnmacht had one.

Seana Perkins was the only Essex player with double-digit assists as she recorded 11 out of the team’s 13 for the match.

Skylar Ross led in digs as she finished with six out of the team’s 20.

Burns, as well as Koreen Polsley and Andrea Allen each had four digs.

Serving was an issue for Essex as they were 12 for 27 in the match.

Bethany Johnson had three aces against Stanton, to lead Essex.

Essex was on the road Monday night to play West Nodaway.

Results weren’t available as of press time.

Tuesday, Essex is back on the road as they head to Council Bluffs to play Heartland Christian.

The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club in Council Bluffs.

Essex will be on the road once more Thursday when they head to Farragut to play Nishnabotna.

Stanton played Southwest Valley Monday night. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Tuesday night, Stanton will be home as they face East Mills. The match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Finally on Saturday, Stanton plays in the Bedford Tournament.
