Viqueens rout Fremont-Mills to advance to finals
TABOR — The Stanton Viqueens advanced to the Regional Final of 1A Region 4 after sweeping Fremont-Mills Friday night in Tabor.
“My girls were excited, were ready to play,” Viqueens Head Coach J. Browning said.
The Viqueens defeated the Knights in the first game, 25-13. Stanton jumped out to a 17-4 lead and never looked back.
Game two was closely contested early on, with Fremont-Mills taking a 5-4 lead. The Knights’ lead didn’t last long as the Viqueens eventually jumped out to a 20-8 lead, while winning the second game 25-11.
Game three proved to be closely contested again. The Knights took a two-point lead at one point in the game, but the Viqueens regained the lead and eventually extended it from 20-18 to 24-18.
“There were more hitting errors in this game than I would have liked to have seen at this point in our season,” Browning said. “But we adjusted in other areas of our game and picked up those parts.”
The Knights scored three straight points to cut the Stanton lead to 24-21. It would not be enough as the Viqueens won the third game and clinched a spot in the Regional Final.
“We just have to play our game,” Browning said. “We’re going to play our game and adjust.”
Sisters Kadie and Carmen Subbert combined for 19 of Stanton’s 30 kills in the match. Carmen also led the team with six digs, while Kadie had seven blocks (six solo) for the match.
“We really just came up pumped,” Kadie Subbert said. “We want to win and keep winning and go all the way.”
The Viqueens had 14 serving aces in the match, with Ragen Anderson responsible for six. Anderson also led Stanton with 14 assists.
Stanton will now head up to Corning to face Bedford tonight. Bedford is coming off a 25-21, 25-7, 25-14 win over Lamoni.
The two teams previously faced off at the Bedford Tournament on Sept. 25. Bedford won both matches against the Viqueens in the tournament.
“They’re a great team, but we can play right with them,” Browning said.
Prior to Friday night, Stanton defeated the Villisca Blue Jays 3-0 at home, last Tuesday, in the quarterfinals of Region 4.
The two kept it close in the first game, with the Viqueens edging the Blue Jays, 25-21. Villisca would only combine for 21 points the next two games as Stanton won 25-12 and 25-9.
Kadie Subbert once again led the Viqueens in kills with 12. Molly Haley was right behind her with 11 kills in the match. Of the 30 digs Stanton compiled in the win over Villisca, Carmen Subbert led with 10, while Rachel Sorensen had eight.
Anderson again led Stanton in assists with 16. Roey Sink was the next closest in the assists category with eight.
