Viqueens stay perfect 8-0; Subbert scores season high 33 points

STANTON – The Viqueens continued their undefeated season with a 61-53 win over Riverside and maintained their seventh-ranked spot in the state, Tuesday.

Stanton jumped out to a fast start, leading 31-19 at the half, taking advantage of the Bulldogs soft zone defense, allowing Stanton a lot of shooting opportunities from the outside.

Kadie Subbert led the Viqueens shooting 10 of 17 (58.8 percent) from the field as she scored a season-high 33 points in the win. Subbert was four of nine from behind the three-point line.

“She was playing a really aggressive game today,” Stanton Girls’ Basketball Head Coach Bruce Subbert said. “Most teams haven’t been giving her as many open looks as she had today, and she took advantage of that.”

The Bulldogs continued to inch back into the game, cutting the third-quarter lead to eight and were within six in the final quarter, but the Viqueens pushed on to their eighth win of the year.

The Viqueens improved to 8-0 on the season with their win, going into the break, with their closest game being in a win over Essex, 40-37, Dec. 5.

With the undefeated start, state ranking, and only one senior to lead the team, the Viqueens aren’t feeling the pressure that would be expected.

“A lot of our younger players have a lot of games,” Coach Subbert said. “When you look at Jordan Sorensen, Molly Haley, Paige Peterson, and Kadie Subbert, they all have a lot of experience, and when Shelby Wagg returns in a couple weeks, we will have even more to work with. So I don’t think we’ll see much difference with the way they play with any added pressure.” All five of those players played in every game of the Viqueens 16-5 2008-09 season.

At the winter break, Subbert leads the Viqueens averaging 17 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Sorensen, the team’s only senior, has added 10.5 points and is second on the team behind her sister Rachel Sorensen (20 assists), a freshman, with 19 assists.
