Viqueens grab gold in shuttle hurdle

For the second time in three years, the Stanton girls were golden in the shuttle hurdle relay.
Two years after winning gold in the event at the Iowa State Track and Field meet, Stanton’s Hannah Olson nipped Fremont-Mills’ Lana Alley by a nose to win the Viqueens’ the gold by .06.
Olson teamed with Kyla Hart, Lauren Roberts and Lauren Johnson to top the 1A field with a state-record time of 1:04.69.
Olson and the Viqueens weren’t done there, however.
Olson, a senior, was second in the 100-meters – to her shuttle hurdle relay rival, Alley – and 16th in the 200-meters. She also helped the 4x100-meter relay to a ninth-place finish. Hart, Roberts, Johnson and Olson ran a 51.31 in the preliminaries.
Johnson had a top leap of 16 feet to place 11th in the long jump.
Griswold’s girls won four medals in Des Moines.
Addison Adams and Carsyn Adams were fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles. Addison added an eighth-place medal in the 100-meter hurdles.
Both Adams girls and Reese Laverty and Brystol Wyman were fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay dominated by the Corner Conference.
Council Bluffs St. Albert captured the Class 1A girls crown with 46 points to Saint Ansgar’s 40 points.
The 1A boys title went to Lisbon with 54 points. ACGC was the runner-up with 44 points.
The Griswold boys’ Conner Bowers won a fourth-place medal in the high jump at state and had six top 12 finishes.
“The Tigers qualified eight events to state, achieving personal records in four, a testament to their offseason and weekend grind,” said Griswold coach Andy Everett. “Beyond school records and all-time rankings, the state meet instilled a lifelong passion for the sport. It’s not the destination but the journey.”
On Thursday, the Tigers’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Peyton Cook, Auden Wilson, Wyatt Silk and Bode Wyman placed 11th while Holden Jensen smashed his 3200m personal record by 20 seconds, running 9:54.99 to finish 12th, breaking the ten-minute barrier and claiming fourth on Griswold’s all-time list. Cody Dorscher then ran a personal-best 51.33 in the 400-meters, finishing 11th and securing sixth on the all-time list.
The following day, Conner Bowers earned a fourth-place medal in the high jump, while RJ Dishong threw a personal-record 148-09 in the discus to finish 10th, just shy of the finals. Dorscher added a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.
On Saturday, the sprint medley relay of Wyman, Bowers, Wilson and Dorscher took 18th, with Jensen capped the Tigers’ day with a 12th place finish in the 1,600.
Essex’s Isaiah Sholes was seventh in the high jump with a top leap of 6 feet, 1 inches.
Walker Mendenhall medaled for Southwest Valley with his seventh-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The Timberwolves’ Brody Crozier added ninth and 18th place finishes in the 100-meters and the long jump.
