Southwest Valley wins first conference title
CORNING – Southwest Valley has won its first Pride of Iowa Conference Championship.
The girls’ cross country team made history as the first team to win a title since the Corning and Villisca high schools merged into one three years ago.
Running at their home course, Southwest Valley edged I-35 by three points to win the conference meet, 64-67.
“We had a great night,” Southwest Valley coach Sandy Winter said after the meet. “I am very proud of our girls and how they raced tonight.”
Three Timberwolves finished in the top 10, including Mazzy Hummel (sixth), Elizabeth Fuller (seventh) and Kendra Top (10th). All seven Southwest Valley varsity competitors finished in the top 30, which included Diana Berggren (16th), Kaylee Jacobs (25th), Renee Williams (26th) and Payton Thomas (29th).
Winter mentioned how this championship was a team effort.
“The pride I have runs throughout the entire team as everyone plays a part from the runners to the managers and the coaches,” Winter said.
Southwest Valley is back in action Thursday as they travel to Treynor to compete in the Class 1A state qualifying meet.
