Sports Calendar: May 5 plus conference previews
It's a very big day on the sports calendar as not one, but two conference track meets are scheduled for Tuesday.
Here's what is on the calendar for Tuesday:
Western Iowa Conference Meet
The Western Iowa Conference track meet kicks off early at 3:30 p.m. at Griswold High School. Both Griswold track teams will be competing against the likes of Treynor, Missouri Valley, Underwood and Logan-Magnolia.
Last year, it was Griswold winning the girls title with a score of 149 points and edging out Treynor.
Griswold distance runners Rebekah Topham and Alyx Flippin are likely contenders on the girls side. Topham has the top times in the 800, 1,500, 3,000 and 400-meter hurdles. Flippin is second in the conference behind Topham in the 1,500 and 3,000.
Jackie Rush and Mykenzie Rainey are also likely contenders to win on the girls side. Both have won multiple times this season in shot put and discus events. Rush has the top discus throw in the conference with 115'9".
For the boys of Griswold, the relay teams have a chance at conference titles, including the 4x100 and the distance medley. Individually, David Thompson could win a conference title as he has the top time in the 3,200.
Corner Conference Meet
Meanwhile, it will be a large gathering in Tabor for the Corner Conference. Stanton, Essex and East Mills are all scheduled to compete. Last year, it was Fremont-Mills winning for the girls, while East Mills won the boys team title.
There's a lot of interesting races and events in both Corner meets for Tuesday.
In the girls meet, one race to keep an eye on is the 100-meter dash. Essex sprinter Daiton Martin is among the potential contenders in the race as she'll likely face off against Sidney's Lexy Larsen and East Mills' Kendra Croghan.
Meanwhile, the shuttle hurdle relays could be an interesting race in the girls meet. Stanton, who won the race last year, will be a likely contender against Fremont-Mills.
In the boys meet, there's a potentially loaded field in the 100-meter dash. Stanton's Chris Jones is among the contenders. He has the fourth fastest time in the conference. The top five are all within a half second of each other.
The 400-meter hurdles could be a race to watch. Stanton's Connor Hultman is a key contender. He has the second fastest time in the conference.
Distance runner Cody McClintock is the top contender for the Essex boys team. McClintock has the second best time in the conference.
Sam Rew and Dylan Schroeder are likely contenders for East Mills. Rew will be a likely contender in the high jump. Schroeder is a possible contender in the 400-meter hurdles.
The meet will start at 4 p.m. at Fremont-Mills High School.
